Cultural understanding and the assistance of home security systems

The breadth of cultural differences among peoples is something that still strikes me as awesome. I have even realized that vision and hearing are not only biological, but cultural as well. For instance, what do you see when you look at the moon? Most of us would probably say, “I see the man in the moon.” The Japanese don’t see a man in the moon. They see a rabbit making rice cakes! (Figure that one out.). I recently had a workshop exercise where each participant from different countries was assigned one of five animals – a pig, a horse, a dog, a cat, a hen. They were asked to walk around the room and make the sound of the animal to locate the group to which they belonged. Well, it was really tough going to find one’s groupmates because we learned that the Danish dog didn’t have the same barking sound as a Chinese dog, a South African dog, and a dog living in the Czech republic. While we were all having fun learning about each other’s identity, a couple of youngsters outside my studio damaged a car of one participant from Iraq. They equated the Iraqi people with terrorism, which I thought was just plain stupid. Good thing that there’s Home Security Systems in my studio. I kind of saw the attack coming since the idea of cultural understanding are controversial for stupid people. Weeks before the actual workshop, the participants helped me set up DIY Security Systems. The security camera caught the faces of the youngsters and they have already been arrested by the police.
